Did you know that before being the multi-sectional classified advertisements website you now know today, Craigslist started out as an email distribution list to friends which featured local events in the San Francisco Bay Area? Craigslist, stylized as craigslist, founder Craig Newmark observed how people helped one another in friendly, social, and trusting communal ways on the internet. With this in mind, along with the feeling of being isolated as a newcomer to San Francisco, decided to create something similar for local events as a way to stay on top of the city’s busy arts and technology scene. Despite the website’s, and possibly Newmarks’s, determination to avoid commercialism at all cost, craigslist survived and rose to popularity within a span of one year.
According to Newmark, the rise of the site’s popularity can be largely attributed to word-of-mouth and considers it more effective and less costly than putting up advertisements. As of 2017, the number of craigslist visitors amounted to at least 53 million within a period of 30 days. Additionally, it also dominates the United States rental housing market, with millions of new listings every month. With its availability in plenty of cities around the world, as well as its presence in different platforms, one thing is certain: craigslist isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
