DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Crash Bandicoot does not resemble the real bandicoot? While Crash’s long nose was based off the terrestrial marsupial from Australia, his design was also influenced by the wombat, the potoroo, and the famous Warner Bros. character, Taz the Tasmanian devil. Now you cannot unsee it too, right? From the spiked fur on the head, the big neckless face, and the ability to spin his way into and out of trouble, Crash is like Taz’ long lost cousin. Also, while he was still in the mill being created by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin, Crash was called as Willie the Wombat, but he looked a little stuffier, less scary, and worse, the name was already taken by a non-video game character. Hence, Crash Bandicoot was born and led to the creation of one of the easiest platforming games of the time. It was just about dodging obstacles and getting powerups and gems but still is one of the most entertaining games of all time.
Crash, whose creation has spawned more than a dozen Crash Bandicoot video games over 23 years, was created in 1996 by Sony to rival the mascots of Sega and Nintendo: Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario, respectively. While Sonic is an iconic blue hedgehog nowadays, and Mario the Plumber is a staple in Halloween costume creation, the two underwent several revisions like Crash. Mario, who first appeared in the Donkey Kong arcade games, was initially a carpenter named Jumpman with a pet ape and a princess for a girlfriend. It was only in Donkey Kong Junior when he was named Mario and was called a plumber who fights monsters in the sewage of New York City. Sonic creator Naoto Ohshima had many experiments before he concluded that his character will be a hedgehog. He tinkered with drawings of dogs, armadillos, a Theodore Roosevelt lookalike, and a rabbit in creating the flagship hero. He went to Central Park in New York and asked passersby which drawing they liked the most, and the hedgehog initially named Mr. Needlemouse, won the poll. Ohshima thinks it is because the cool hedgehog transcends race and gender and appealed to all kinds of audiences.
