"I wanted to see what Lookeen was all about so I decided to give it a test run. There are two versions a free and a professional, so I chose to use the free. There are a lot of features available to use and the program does indeed make it simple to search, but in my opinion I can do virtually everything here already with the default windows search function. So if you need something because you are afraid to use the default windows search function, Lookeen is for you. However, I do not advise you get the professional version. The added features are not worth the price tag associated with the package."

"I am the systems administrator for a national law firm. One of the most frequent request I would get from users would be the ability to search for specific keywords in a document from are vast file library. I tried several products that were not getting the job done. They would constantly miss files and the interfaces were not user friendly enough for non-technical people. I finally came across Agent Ransack and it has been a breath of fresh air. My users can just jump right into it and have almost no trouble using its search features. It is miles ahead of other search programs when it comes to completely searching all the files queried. I would highly recommend this program to other systems admins looking for a great Windows search program."

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the first three search engines ever made were named “Archie”, “Veronica”, and “Jughead”? The “Archie” search engine is considered to be the first one developed, which was derived from the word “archive” without the V and created by three computer science students from McGill University School of Computer Science in 1990, in which the program downloads the directory listings of all the files located on public anonymous FTP sites, creating then a searchable database of downloadable file names. The service began as a project for students and volunteer staff of the university and further work on the Archie server was ceased during the late 90s, although it is still maintained and active for historical purposes in Poland at the University of Warsaw’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling.

A year after Archie’s release, the Gopher protocol emerged, spearheaded by University of Minnesota’s Microcomputer Center manager Mark McCahill, and with it, two programs dubbed “Veronica” and “Jughead”. Despite the Archie server creator Alan Emtage stating that there were no relations between his program and the Archie comics, the two new programs from the Gopher protocol were characters from the series, thus referencing their predecessor.

Although the earlier search engines might be considered inferior compared to the ones we have today, most of the features that were incorporated within their forerunners - like algorithms, keywords, and related studies - are what made modern search engines easier to use.

"Searches are performed from a database of indexed files and folders instead of directly from the hard-drive, making them faster. Word search does not perform well. I found the database file size for a 300 GB hard disk to be around 30 MB. "

"Sometimes I find myself in a situation where I need a file on my computer but I can't remember where I put that file. This is rather frustrating. I have used the regular search feature that comes installed with my windows computer, but it sometimes didn't find the documents I was looking for. Someone told me about AstroGrep, and I gave it try. I will say that it is one of the best search programs for Windows. I found files faster with AstroGrep than I did using the search feature that already came with my computer."

This program let me find duplicate files and delete them, so my computer became less cluttered. It was tough to use, since I think it's in Russian, and it didn't seem to do anything else. I needed something a bit more feature-heavy and in English!"
