"I find the combination of a historical fiction and a mystery within the same book very compelling. Also, The Lotus Palace reveals a social status situation in China that is very interesting and new. The mystery is interesting, but the love story and class differences also enhances this book. I definitely look forward to reading the next book in the series."

"The author of this book has written a number of acclaimed stories involving detectives, mysteries, and other such themes, so it would seem appropriate to call her one the best female authors in this genre, at least considering her whole body of work. Not sure which of these author's books I would specifically call her best, but this seems to be the first one in a longer series, so it's a good pick in that regard. All her works seem to be of a fairly consistent quality, so you seemingly can't go wrong."

"My favorite of the Sandilands novels, number two in the series. It's still India, and it's still the last days of the Raj, but this time Joe is bound for Simla, for a holiday in the cool of the Himalayan foothills. Murder strikes before he even arrives, and the plot thickens from there. The social and psychological complexities writhe beneath the proper British surface of Simla, and it adds up to a really good read"
