"The setting and era of the 1930s sets the stage and makes this book a winner. Charming, interesting, and more complex than one might think given a 'teen girl book'. Very warm memoir style book that maintains interest."

"This is a book that, even over the stories different iterations has been an award winner time and time again. It is an extremely emotional tale, which although can be heavy at times, is a very rewarding read. It is hard to rate individual novels as "Best" given such broad categories, but I think I would have to agree with that Flowers for Algernon is a literary masterpiece worthy of owning."

"Classic reading that everyone should be required to read. It tells the story of hiding in a basement in the Netherlands while the Germans were looking for Jewish people. Heartfelt, warm, and scary. Such a touching story. "

"This is largely a love story disguised as a diary... which is a cheater's way of telling a story. The plot reminds me of fairy tales and isn't something I'd be interested in reading as an adult with real responsibilities. If you're looking for a true diary novel, Anne Frank is the standard... this book doesn't even come close."

"Diary novels span a wide assortment of time periods, yet that often does not define the quality of the book. One of the best diary novels, is this one written by Karleen Bradford. This novel does excellent job at setting the story, and excels in telling the story of the protagonist through her eyes. Set during the Civil War, the plight of the protagonist will captivate you throughout the novel, and is worth reading if you enjoy the genre."
