WHAT’S THE MEANING?

A dungeon crawler is a subgenre of role-playing games, characterized by the exploration of a labyrinthine environment while battling monsters, looking for treasure, and defeating the enemy in aa occasional boss battle. The term “dungeon crawl” is analogous to “bar crawl,” since the player usually fights his way across dungeon room to dungeon room. A “dungeon” in this case does not only refer to an underground prison, but to any subterranean environment. As a genre, it was influenced by the tabletop game Dungeons and Dragons, as well as J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dungeon crawlers are closely associated with roguelike games. Roguelike games and dungeon crawlers have the same progenitor, the 1980 game Rogue. Rogue set the standards and defined both genres. However, dungeon crawlers are much more diverse than roguelike games as roguelikes, by definition, are “games that are like Rogue [in features and characteristics].” The 1980s was a pivotal point for PC RPGs and dungeon crawler games for alike. During that period, the complexity and gameplay of computer games were significantly limited by the lack of storage capacity and computing power of the computers. The tile-based graphics of the time were actually effective in building mazes because they resulted in similar-looking environments.
