DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the series of Dynasty Warriors games is based on China’s history? Dynasty Warriors was initially known as a simple hack and slash game only. During the late 90s, Omega Force developed the series for the gaming company Koei Tecmo. Before the first game was developed, Omega Force members were originally planning on creating just a new action game. However, many of Koei’s employees are fans of the Three Kingdoms Era -- a historical period in China that lasted from 220 to 280 AD. The concept of a Three Kingdoms action game was unconsciously created by Koei’s team. They had talked over whether they should just develop the game themselves or pitch it to another developer, but Omega Force won out. Dynasty Warriors was based on the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms which tells the story of a power struggle between the three empires (Shu Han, Cao Wei, and Eastern Wu led by Sun Family) in ancient China. In fact, Cao Cao, Liu Bien, Sun Quan, and all the other characters are actual historical figures. Koei has been making historical games for more than 30 years so they have people who are experts in history. They even have a database of all the research they made over all that time.Dynasty Warriors 1 didn’t involve large-scale battles or endlessly chained combos unlike the modern series today. The graphics were already very good at that time -- setting it apart from its contemporaries. The game’s underlying combat mechanics were also solid. Although much has changed from Dynasty Warriors 1 as a one-on-one match to Dynasty Warriors 2 turning into a button-mashing battlefield, most people say that the third series until Dynasty Warriors 5 and 6 didn’t change. Now, the franchise is already on its 9th installment and people are dubbing it as the best Dynasty Warriors empires game. When they are still on Dynasty Warriors 8, the president of Koei Tecmo, Hisashi Koinuma mentioned to the press on January 2018 that he wanted to make plans on making a crossover with the Star Wars franchise from Lucasfilms. Koinuma chooses Star Wars because they wanted to bring a Sci-Fi universe to the Dynasty Warriors series.
