Wolfenstein 3D released back in 1992? ID Software developed the game for MS-DOS. Many considered it as the grandfather of the modern Wolfenstein franchise. As well as World War II shooters, and the FPS genre as a whole and inspired some of the best fps game in history. It looks retro compared to today’s shooters. Many considered this game to be very violent and transgressive at the time. ID Software followed this up with DOOM the following year in 1993. It too had frenetic, high-speed combat that inspired many shooters that came after it. Games like Quake and Unreal focused more on testing the player's skill in combat. The Halo series defined FPS game for consoles and released in 2001.
Today, the FPS landscape is much different than before. A new sub-genre in shooters called "looter shooter" is gaining popularity. It mixes RPG's loot mechanic with the fast-paced action of shooters. Shooting mechanics in games are more or less defined and tested. Developers focus more on creating a riveting story and immersive experience for players. One such developer is Ubisoft with its various shooting game titles and franchises. One of which is their game, Far Cry. It has spawned plenty of titles over the years. To this day, many still consider Far Cry 3 as one of the best Far Cry game ever made. The Far Cry series is alive and well with plenty of promise for the future.
