"A shimmering, fascinating beast of a whodunnit, set in exotic Laos, described here with a luxury of earthy details and an emphasis on the senses. The book piles on the oddities, idiosyncracies and other eccentricities and mixes it deftly with a robust dose of Holmes-inspired sleuthing and characterization. At times the novel is reminiscent of Victorian novels, at other times it feels very modern, with its coroners insistence on technical language. A wonderful journey through a jungle of surprising colors and images. And a good mystery to boot. Flavorful."

"Without Consent is an example of a book that features a medical examiner as it's protagonist. It's written by Kathryn Fox and I like this take on the crime genre. It's nice to read mysteries from the point of view of people other than just the police detective's working on the case. "

"This book was perfect for what I was looking for. The story was great, and the characters were charming. I had to look for a book with a medical examiner character for a book report for my class, and this worked very well. I finished reading this book, not because of my assignment, but because I genuinely enjoyed it."
