Did you know that Tango Charlie was banned in some parts of India, specifically in Assam? Despite being widely acclaimed by the Americans, the Bollywood film still fell short in winning the hearts of its Indian audience. Yes, in the U.S., this Hindi movie was an instant hit, earning over $6 million after its release. Amazing, right? That's not even the only thing incredible about it. The film's DVD sales also went up to a robust height, so much so that it even earned the spot for the fourth highest-selling Bollywood DVD of the year. BBC's Jaspreet Pandohar also praised the war film, saying that Tango Charlie provides an interesting lens to the country's state of terrorism, violence, and valor. It also won The Hindu's commendations for its bravery in depicting a subject that the media shies away from.
Yet, it makes you wonder where did Tango Charlie go wrong. Well, in East India, apparently. Mani Shankar's film received backlash from the Bodo community of Assam for showing their society in a negative light. If you've seen the movie in the big screens in 2005, you've surely been greatly horrified, appalled even, by the savagery of a Bodo militant who cuts off the ears of a hostage, only to give it as a gift for his lover. Just like you, the community isn't happy about it. In fact, the Advisor of All Bodo Students' Union even insisted on banning it across the state. They also asked the filmmakers to issue a public apology.
