Total War: Arena was the first free-to-play title in the series. Total War: Arena is a strategy game developed by Creative Assembly. They are a British game developer from Horsham. In partnership with Wargaming Alliance, they published the game worldwide in November 2016. The official release was on February 22, 2018. It focuses on multi-player, mixing elements, and multiplayer online battle arena gameplay. It features a 10 vs 10 battle with one player controlling 3 units that each contains 100 warriors. The game has two gameplay modes, one versus a human player and one versus bots. The players compete in matches that last for a max of 15 minutes but on average, lasts for about 7 to 9 minutes. In every game mode, a group of 10 players battle with another group of 10. Win the game by killing all enemies and having more soldiers left by the end of the time limit. Players control commanders who are historical figures. 13 in-game commanders spread across four factions. Players unlock and upgrade these commanders over time. This is to enhance their 3 unique abilities and gain an advantage in battle.

This type of games has also made their way to gaming consoles. Some of the best free Xbox One games can be had on it's Xbox Live Membership service. The same goes for the PlayStation 4 on its PSN online membership service. One of the most popular Xbox One multiplayer game right now is Fortnite. It also supports cross-platform gameplay across PC, PS4, and other mobile devices.
