"I wanted to have a costume made for an upcoming event that I was attending and this is fursuit site was great. She was nice and very accommodating. It was a pleasant experience overall."

Did you know that the term 'cosplay' was invented in 1984? This was coined by Japanese reporter Nobuyuki Takahashi, after he attended Worldcon in Los Angeles. He used this term to describe his experience with the Japanese audience. However, he coined such term to avoid using 'masquerade', which he thought was old and outdated. Back in 1930s North America when it began, this event was called 'costuming'. This early cosplay did not require its participants to mimic a character's appearance. The only thing needed was to dress appropriately for a certain genre. Times have changed and cosplaying has been more organized and detailed. It has created a subculture of its own. Cosplay is no longer limited to sci-fi or anime but has also branched into other categories. Participants dressed as superheroes, cartoon characters, video game characters are totally common.

In Japan, cosplay has been embedded as part of their pop culture. In districts like Harajuku and Shibuya, cosplayers even dress up on a daily basis and it is not odd to see someone stand out amongst all the civilians. Throughout the years, cosplay costumes have branched out into fursuits. Cosplaying with these suits usually involves characters the wearer has made themselves. Canadian Deanna Larsson (also known as Beetlecat) is one of the more famous fursuit makers. She is known to dominate the fursuit shop industry for her feline avatar. To make her fursuit designs, she usually draws inspiration from Disney movies and other figures. With the use of sculptural materials (including felt, fleece, latex, silicone, clay, and more), she has put out some of the best fursuits in the market.
