DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that for twenty years, this man has survived entirely by hacking online games? The game hacker estimated that he made three hundred ninety-seven trillion dollars worth of WildStar gold. But, it was not always that way. Manfred (not his real name) began hacking games when he was routinely killed in fights in Ultima Online. He says that his dial-up connection were no match to the broadband speeds of other players. Hence, he found ways to cheat by hacking the game. In the online massive multiplayer game there was a pre-set and finite number of houses that could be created in the game. He says he devised a way to delete players' houses then take over their lots. The surplus of lots gave him an idea. He could auction off the properties he owned on Ultima Online on eBay. The result? He was able to sell one castle for two thousand dollars. In the two decades since he hacked the MMORPG, he has found ways to hack and profit off other games such as Lineage 2, Final Fantasy XI, and Guild Wars 2.
In the Def Con conference in 2017, Manfred announced that he had stopped hacking games. Instead, he works as a consultant in order to help game developers tighten their security. In fact, different industries are now hiring hackers to test the quality of their code. If you’re looking to become a hacker, there are hacking resources and game hacking apps available online. Like Manfred, you can also have a legal and lucrative career as a hacker.
