DID YOU KNOW?
The Grand Theft Auto or GTA game franchise has been around for 21 years now? The first ever GTA game released back in 1997 for Windows. This game and its successor, GTA 2 both featured 2D graphics and a top-down camera view. The gameplay of these games is all crime-based from assault, theft, and the like. They revolved around three major cities; Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas. These themes and locations will carry over through the rest of the game's series. The release of GTA 3 saw the series taking on a new direction. It was the first to feature a third-person, over the shoulder viewpoint. This was also the first that set the foundation for its open world nature. This is something that succeeding GTA games will be built upon moving forward.
Today's gaming landscape is different from when GTA 3 released. Open-world games are aplenty with each one trying to bring something new to the table. GTA games will always remain as the games that defined the genre. The past decade has proven to be stiff competition for the franchise though. Games like GTA keep getting released offering alternatives to gamers, sometimes being better. While we wait for the next GTA game to arrive, there are plenty of other great games that we can play in the meantime.
