Did you know that the number of Steam accounts is almost the same as the population of Japan? According to Valve, the developer of the software distribution platform Steam, there are over 125 million active Steam accounts. There are an estimated 126 million people in Japan and the number of Steam users is even bigger than the population of Mexico with 121 million people.

The founders of Valve are former officemates. Gabe Newell spent 13 years working for Microsoft. Newell left Microsoft in 1996 and co-founded Valve with another Microsoft employee, Mike Harrington. Steam was created to easily update online games and strengthen anti-cheat and anti-piracy measures. They made a proposal to various companies including Microsoft to allow them to build a client that could provide patches and game content to online players but was rejected. So they started to work on Steam alone. Valve unveiled Steam to the public on March 2002 at the Game Developers Conference. In January 2003, the Beta version was released to the public to serve as a digital content distribution channel. Now, Steam is home to more than 3,500 best games including games for kids and some dark games and is available in 237 countries around the world in 21 different languages. In 2018, Valve has reported that they are past the 90 million monthly active users. The main factor in this growth is Steam’s entry into the Chinese market. Reportedly, there are now 30 million users in China even though there are few Steam games in the Chinese language. Dota 2, a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena video game, was the first to reach 1 million concurrent players meaning there were one million people playing at the same time. It’s considered the best game on Steam

    Written on April 4, 2018
"Not sure if Pillars of Eternity is one of the absolute best games on Steam, as that is definitely a matter of personal taste, to some extent, but I personally enjoyed it, based on my own preferences. It feels old-school in its approach to the RPG genre, which might be a pro or a con for some - some might consider it dated, while others might appreciate this approach. Perhaps it is not quite as addicting as some of its extremely storied predecessors, nor is it too groundbreaking, but it compares very favorably to most modern games."

"There are many, many games on Steam, but it is not really an exaggeration at all to call Borderlands 2 one of the best ones. There's tons of content and the game is quite addicting. The game has a sense of humor and doesn't take itself too seriously. There's tons of replay value and things to explore and do. The base game is most definitely worth the money, but prepare to spend more, as you'll undoubtedly want the DLC as well."

"We got this game on a fluke (my daughter ordered it). It's okay. I'm not much of a gamer, so it suits me. I like the puzzles. They aren't that challenging (which I like). I don't like getting stuck on levels in games. But my daughter, who is a more experienced 'gamer' had a different reaction: she thought it was too easy and complained that it wasn't nearly as challenging as she wanted. So, if you just want a generally entertaining thing - like me - it's okay. If you're an experienced 'gamer' - I'd say pick something else. "
