WHAT’S THE MEANING?
Ghost followers are accounts that are inactive or only lurk on social media platforms. These accounts follow other accounts but do not get in any activity on the site like liking, sharing, commenting, messaging, and posting. Real people or bots can make these accounts.
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that there is an event known as "The Great Instagram Purge of 2014"? It is when Instagram deleted fake accounts on their site. Celebrities and brands alike lost a significant percentage of their Instagram following. Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and Selena Gomez, to name a few, were outed to have been buying fake Instagram accounts to increase the number of their followers and to provide a false sense of popularity. Justin Bieber lost the highest number of followers, losing 3, 538, 228 followers overnight. Instagram is not the only social media platform riddled with fake accounts, as Twitter is also chock-full of ghost followers. Donald Trump, for example, has more than 50 million followers on Twitter, but Twitter Audit revealed 37% to be fake accounts. In this modern age where social media presence matters a lot, vanity metrics such as the follower count matters little when a lot of your followers are bots that can be bought online at a low cost.
