"This is one of the best books I've ever read. Narrated by Death, otherwise known as The Grim Reaper, it focuses on a young girl in Nazi Germany and how she deals with the horrors of the time. It's a book that's in a way difficult to read because at times it's emotionally draining, but it's also warm and uplifting. "

"The Color Purple is a classic for a reason. As a black woman, this historical fiction book is one of the best--deep, moving, and wonderfully expressive. Alice Walker is an amazing writer with an ability to make all her characters lively and relatable. Because of the themes and story--a tough life of a young girl navigating race and gender in an impoverished and segregated community--it can be a hard read, but it will be illuminating for all. I've read it multiple times and will certainly do so again."

"Often times, the word sequel is synonymous with disappointment. Many authors, in trying to replicate the magic of an original work, end up producing something that is merely a shadow of what preceded it. Not surprisingly, this is not the case with Frank Nappi’s riveting sequel to “The Legend of Mickey Tussler.” Sophomore Campaign” is Nappi’s latest foray into the world of baseball as a metaphor for the human plight. The images are as rich as before, the language just as lyrical and awe inspiring. Protagonist Mickey Tussler continues his baseball journey and in doing so, unlocks more insight for readers into realms that are never usually explored. The cast of characters grows once more, and Mickey and Murph are both tested once again in ways that beckon us all to re-examine our own lives. In short, “Sophomore Campaign” is a wonderful continuation of a cleverly conceived tale and an arousing platform for yet another Mickey Tussler novel in the future."

I think a good coming of age book needs to show how someone is shaping their own identity, and I just don't see that here. These girls are acting and responding to the world, but I don't see how they are really growing internally. I don't know, maybe I'm being too harsh, but that was my take. Some might like it more."

I have found the idea of a God ordained belief that slavery is okay to be very interesting especially as the book goes into depth about the other religious belief's that are similar to belief's that are held onto even in modern society. "Ninotchka Rosca's book, State of War, tells one of the Philippines' dark past: Martial Law. She, in my opinion, is using the endless parties in the book as an allegory of covering the atrocities of the military. Being distracted and drunk all the time, the people in the island of K------ were oblivious of what is happening around them. Even when the characters were chased by the military, the people seemed not to care to help. The only exception is the transvestite, who brought Eliza a gun. Another of its themes is betrayal. In Book two, The Book of Acts, a chapter where it mainly concerned on Anna's lineage, Mayang, Anna's grandmother, had an affair with her husband's chemist. Well, the two had had a child. Carlos Louis knew all along his wife's betrayal, only he did not speak about it. An American tenant of theirs, Chris Hansen, purportedly the grandfather of Eliza, beguiled Mayang to sell their house, for it was more advantageous to sell than to lease it further. Having sold the house, Mayang thought the proceed, being deposited to the pirate's chest, grew as a tree would. Alas, it didn't. Forgetfulness is also a theme as shown in the dialogues as Anna has spoken thus: the people only know beginnings. The only bad in the book is the way Ninotchka end the novel. I guess, she ran out of time finishing it; in any case, the book is really good, though sometimes, especially in book 3, it becomes abstruse"
