"I think that there are probably better solutions to the topic, especially considering that the description does not do a good job of enticing people to give the book a try. If I saw this answer, I would probably overlook for other, more interesting answers. If I saw "Better Times Than These" on a shelf in a bookstore, I would probably think it was about something very different than the Vietnam War. "

"A nice way to look into a weird time in United States history. Following a regular man who gets becomes an infantryman fighting in another country against gorilla warfare that the United states was not prepared for. A very solid read some people get caught up on how much the book focuses on drugs but its a huge red light that needs to be talked about, think about the suicide pilots from japan in WW2 they were also given drugs like the government did in Vietnam."

"Really interesting book. It's a fiction book but the content of it can tell a lot about the time period it was published in. Great fiction story and great informational book about a slice of history."

"What I came to like most about Fields of Fire, or, FOF for short, is that is provides a full account of how things really operated in Vietnam. This book is not dark, unlike other books that I've read about Vietnam. This one focuses more on the day to operations of the Marines serving at that time."

"It's a good story that shows how wars and past evil can breed more evil in the future. A young kid turns to violence because of another's past sins against the boy's mother. It's very sad but also really poignant."
