"In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction—at once romantic, erotic, suspenseful—and completely unforgettable."

"I have read lots of books about the holocaust for teens and young adults and I can see that I will place this book by Anne Frank among the best. The book is about a 13 year-old jewish girl and her family who because of the rise of the Nazis were forced into hiding. It is masterly written and compelling. It shows that good can still triumph over evil even when the odds are overwhelming. "

Everything about this book is enjoyable -- strong, engaging characters; beautifully written story; exciting, well developed plot; and a gripping, colorful setting. I had this book on my own shelf to read for a couple of years and decided to let her read it first as I was still in the middle of another novel. She loved that it was set in the 1800s and she was able to "experience" how a female lived in that time. The magic used in the book was different than Hogwarts, but it didn't stop her from asking me to purchase the second book in the series."

""Do Not Say We Have Nothing" is highly ambitious but also more than a bit confusing - teens not especially interested in reading might find themselves a bit lost and without the desire to make it through it. The historical elements mostly concern 20th century Chinese history and the repression of the Chinese people suffered under communism. I would have to say that it is sort of a niche book, and that I would not necessarily recommend it to a teenager unless they really want to tackle a more complicated book or are especially interested in reading about the experience of the Chinese people and some of their "genetic memories" that were caused by communist rule."

"I was surprised to learn exactly how old Understood Betsy actually is, but it still has some important lessons to teach modern young people. Self-reliance is one of the biggest themes in the book - back then, it was important to teach this to young girls who were undergoing various forms of social liberation, and it is now still very important, as many young people are growing increasingly sheltered and insular. This ends up being an oddly timely book about how a change in scenery can bring out the best in people"

"My imagination always thirsts for action novels like Josephus. I was really dug into my comfy nook and taken into a new world by his vivid imagination. The scenes and colorful imagery used was an important light for me and I could read it over and over again."

"I thought this novel was okay. I think many teens may struggle with it because it doesn't grab your attention like other works do. I know it is set several years ago, but I don't know if I'd consider it historical fiction. When I was a teen I liked to read about the struggles and hardships and drama of lives in the olden days. This book falls slightly flat in that regard for me."
