DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the very first virtual reality head-mounted display (HMD) device was created back in 1960? It's called the Telesphere Mask and was also patented in the same year. The developer was Morton Heilig, a cinematographer who also created the Sensorama. Heilig described it as "a telescopic television apparatus for individual use." It has no motion-tracking whatsoever, although the device gave stereoscopic 3D and wide vision, along with a stereo sound. After a year, two engineers from Philco Corporation developed the Headsight - an HMD that works the same as the Telesphere Mask. The Headsight featured a video screen for each eye, as well as a magnetic motion tracking system. But, the device was actually developed for military operations, and not for VR purposes.
All the innovations above have no comprehensive term used to describe the field of research. It was only after 1987 when the Virtual Programming Languages founder Jaron Lanier coined the term "virtual reality". In 1991, Virtuality Group launched arcade games and machines with virtual reality capabilities. Players would put on a set of VR goggles then play on the gaming machines with real-time stereoscopic 3D visuals. It started what we have now in the gaming industry. We don't need to go to the arcade only to have immersive gaming experience. We owe it to the continuous development of virtual reality headsets, as well as virtual reality itself. VR games are readily accessible wherever you are. You only need devices like Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR. And if you have absolutely no idea on what to play, it's easy to look up the best HTC Vive games, or just virtual reality games.
