WHAT'S THE MEANING

Bluetooth - taken from a 10th-century Danish king named Harald Bluetooth, who was said to unite disparate, warring regional factions - is a short-range wireless communication technology that allows devices such as mobile phones, computers, and peripherals to transmit data or voice wirelessly over a short distance. The purpose of Bluetooth is to replace the cables that normally connect devices, while still keeping the communications between them secure.

DID YOU KNOW?

Bluetooth was first invested in 1993 as a means to replace cables with a wireless solution. It uses the same 2.4 GHz frequency similar to other wireless devices that we commonly use now such as Wi-Fi routers and cordless phones but it requires a lot less power to operate, therefore also reducing the likeliness that it will interfere with other wireless devices that use the same frequency band. Outside of some minor manufacturer-imposed protocol changes, pairing among Bluetooth devices are seamless for the most part. One of the major disadvantages of using a wireless solution such as Bluetooth would be signal strength and range (how stable is the transmission of data and for how far), and power consumption (how much power is being drained from devices as a result of the wireless connection).

Bluetooth improvements have been steady especially with the introduction of version 4.0 that brought significant changes across the board such as better operating range, lower power consumption, lower production cost, and improved interoperability among different manufacturer hardware. With this, the adoption and mainstream applications of Bluetooth across multiple industries and can be seen in other devices such as audio devices, and other aftermarket input peripherals.
