"This isn't a great recommendation for jewish themed modern novels, as it's written in 1990 and by an author that is not well known. It doesn't have good ratings and is not well known"

"This book had a lasting influence on me when I first read it, being about the Jewish experience during a time of trouble and strife, (and really, what else has there ever been?) The Eagle and the Child (as it was titled in the edition I own) is truely a touching and even thrilling novel I recommend for anyone interested in the current state of Jewish themed literature."

"A friend of mine gifted me this novel as a sort of inside joke, since I am named after Shakespeare's Portia in The Merchant of Venice. He is quick to recite her "...quality of mercy" speech when we're out for drinks and having fun. ha ha! This was a pleasant surprise despite the inside joke part. Well written fiction novel that uses historical events and past to tell a compelling story. I definitely recommend! "

" The Gift of Asher Lev was a Jewish themed novel and told the story, but I just did not like it. I tried to become involved with this book and no matter how hard I tried I could not. Not for me, but could be for someone else. "

"The Chosen is a great book for Jewish young adult readers, especially young men. As the story follows the spiritual growth of two boys, it also develops lessons in family. There is a warm message of love, understanding, and spirituality throughout the entire novel, while keeping an entertaining story line. "
