DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that 2018 historical drama The Favourite was based on real-life gossip about Queen Anne being a lesbian? Yorgos Lanthimos and his crew admitted that historical accuracy is not their main focus on the Academy Award-winning film but it tells the true story of two cousins competing to become the favorite in the court of Queen Anne during the 18th century in England. Aside from the power struggle, the film also features a Lesbian love triangle between Queen Anne, her adviser Sarah Churchill and court newcomer and Sarah’s younger cousin Abigail Hill.
The film stars award-winning actresses Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, and Olivia Colman. After its release on December 26, 2018, the film has received mixed reviews given that the characters are based from real historical figures. It also became a primary contender in the 91st Academy Awards. The Favourite was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Costume design, and Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role while Olivia Colman brought home the Academy Award for Best Actress.
