Makoto Shinkai is a Japanese animator, filmmaker, and manga artist. He was born on February 9, 1973, and he is a native of the Nagano Prefecture. He studied Japanese literature at Chuo University. He was a member of the literature club there and drew picture books. After graduating, he got a job at a video game company making video clips and graphic design for web content. There, he met musician Tenmon, who would later score many of his movies. In 1999, he released his first work, She and Her Cat, a 5-minute short done in monochrome. This was quickly followed by Voices of a Distant Star a year later in 2000. He quit his job to work full-time on this new project. His first full-length film was The Place Promised in Our Early Days and it released to critical acclaim in November 2004.
Shinkai's next big project premiered in March of 2007 with 5 Centimeters per Second. It consisted of 3 short films: Cherry Blossom, Cosmonaut, and concluding with the titular 5 Centimeters per Second. After spending some time away in London, he followed 5 Centimeters with his next feature film, Children Who Chase Lost Voices in May of 2011. His next film that released in 2013 is what some are calling as his ode to nature and the rain, The Garden of Words. His 2016 film, Your Name, became the highest-grossing anime film of all time, overtaking Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away.
