No matter how old you are, chances are you’ve heard of a website called Newgrounds.com. Founded in 1995 by Tom Fulp, Newgrounds was the go-to media site on the internet YouTube’s founding ten years later, and its primary file format was SWF. It was Newgrounds where some animators and musicians found their grounding. Arin “Egoraptor” Hanson, currently one of the hosts of the YouTube channel “Game Grumps” as well as a vocalist of the band “Starbomb”, first made his splash on Newgrounds with a series of video game parodies titled the “Awesome series”, short parodies about various triple-A video game franchises. Dubstep artist xKore also started on Newgrounds, making contributions to a 2011 flash game called “Emo Gunner”. And the ties don’t just stop there as many animation channels on YouTube DREW inspiration from some animations on Newgrounds. Emirichu states her favorite animators were a trio under the name SamBakZa, creators of a flash animation series titled “There She Is” that ran from 2004 to 2008. Domics and Let Me Explain Studios were inspired by Egoraptor’s animations on the flash portal. Additionally, some artists like Derpixon and Minus8 still prefer using Newgrounds to this day as there are less restrictions on flash content in comparison to websites like YouTube.
While Newgrounds isn’t as popular as it is in its heyday, it still stands as one of the most popular websites to find flash content.
