DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that some of the characters in the Mortal Kombat franchise were created because of rumors? Apparently, word really does spread like wildfire when it comes to the popular fighting game, and its developers aren't the kind to gloss it over. In fact, the Mortal Kombat team has a good reputation in turning the word on the street a reality. Many of which were a result of coding glitches. One example is Ermac, the ninja clad in red who debuted in Mortal Kombat 3? He is probably the oldest and perhaps most popular rumored character in the game series. Rumor had it that when one overplays the Sega version of Mortal Kombat using Scorpion, the screen would show an alert message that reads, "ERror MACro." This would also turn Scorpion's yellow palette into red, which eventually led to people believing that there was a secret character named Ermac. Although this was repeatedly debunked, the MK team still decided to create the character. Another example is Skarlet, a supposedly glitched version of Kitana in MKII. However, unlike Ermac, this glitch never really existed. Yes, she was completely fabricated by the MK community. Still, Kombat creator Ed Boon insisted on making this rumor come true.
There are a lot of other rumored characters in the franchise. Some of them are real, some are just pranks (see Nimbus Terrafaux), some are just downright glitches, and some of them remain to be shrouded in mystery. Now, with the release of Mortal Kombat 11's DLC trailer, we're sure you also have speculations on MK11 DLC characters. Who knows, you just give Ed Boon an idea!
