The Criterion Collection Inc. (or simply referred to as Criterion) is an American home video distribution company that was founded in 1984. The company mainly focuses on licensing and selling important classic and contemporary films. One of their main markets comes from film aficionados or cinephile as some have referred themselves to. Not only that, The Criterion has been recognized on its help and contribution to various works in the film industry. Some notable ones are performing film restorations and the use of the letterbox format for widescreen films. They have also been known to add bonus features and commentary tracks for home videos. As the video industry shifted towards online streaming, so did The Criterion Collection. The company started to offer video-on-demand (VOD) services in partnership with MUBI starting in 2008. That same year, the company also started publishing films in the Blu-ray Disc format.
In 2011, the Criterion and all of its VOD titles exclusively on Hulu Plus. This was then taken over by FilmStruck, a streaming service from Turner Classic Movies back in 2016. This partnership laster until 2018 when the service eventually shut down. The Criterion went on to launch its own standalone streaming service called The Criterion Channel. It's a service that will soon be available on HBO Max as well in 2020. In the meantime, we want to focus our attention on the newly launched streaming service.
