When it comes to video streaming services, Netflix is still the king of them all. This is where Amazon Prime Video (commonly referred to as Prime Video) steps in. It's an Internet video-on-demand service developed, wholly-owned, and operated by Amazon itself. Due to the nature of the service, this affords potential users more options as to how they want to consume their media content. The service was first launched in September of 2006 and it was called Amazon Unbox back then in the US. As the service and its library of content grew, Prime Video membership was added. In April 2016 though, Prime Video was split from Amazon Prime and was launched as its own service in December that same year. It was available worldwide aside from a few select locations and it also supported all major devices and platforms. This made it a truly viable alternative to Netflix and its subscription-based offerings. Staying true to its established business model, Prime Video still offers content to either rent or purchase.
