When it comes to video streaming services, Netflix is still the king of them all. However, the service is subscription-based and would not be suited for those who are just looking to watch a particular movie or TV show. This is where Amazon Prime Video (commonly referred to as Prime Video) steps in. It's an Internet video-on-demand service developed, wholly-owned, and operated by Amazon itself. Due to the nature of the service, this affords potential users more options as to how they want to consume their media content. It offers movies and TV shows that are available to rent or to purchase. Similar to Netflix, the service also offers its own originally produced shows that it refers to as Amazon Original Series.
The service was first launched in September of 2006 and it was called Amazon Unbox back then in the US. As the service and its library of content grew, Prime Video membership was added. In April 2016 though, Prime Video was split from Amazon Prime and was launched as its own service in December that same year. It was available worldwide aside from a few select locations and it also supported all major devices and platforms. This made it a truly viable alternative to Netflix and its subscription-based offerings. Staying true to its established business model, Prime Video still offers content to either rent or purchase. It has a wide selection of movies, TV shows, and even the Amazon Original Series was carried over to this service.
