Heavy Metal is the music genre that defines what is a musical genre. It was maybe the first mainstream musical style that defines a community from the late 60s to nowadays and is still evolving and creating new subgenres. It is mainly based on loud and aggressive guitar riffs, loud and screaming voices that sometimes go from operistic styles to growls. Long hair, leather and jeans, bullet belts and a degree of pretended violence are also definitory of the style.
Rap emerged from the urban ghettos and environments of North America during the 70's. It came mostly as a protest music from the black culture that felt outcast from society and the gang culture that created an own ecosystem. Rap took funk as a musical base but evolved to a more rhythmic style and their vocals consisted of lyrics that focused on rhyme and criticism. Run DMC, NWA, Public Enemy are some of the most known names of the genre.
Punk was the return to the basics of rock in a time that was full of grandiloquent bands and music that was thought to be bigger than life. In the late 70's a group of bands from NYC and London took the three chords fundament of Chuck Berry and a DIY and brought the freshness that music lost. Punk was all about fun, protest, do what you like and fight the power as a metaphor of a time that was changing. Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Dead Boys, The Clash are some of the bands.
