WHAT’S THE MEANING?
A full-body scanner is a technology widely used in different fields, especially in airports, to detect objects on a person’s body that cannot be detected by metal detectors for security screening purposes. To put it simply, imagine the X-ray specs that are commonly featured in some science fiction movies that let people see through walls and clothing without physically removing clothes or making any physical contact.
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that there is a health concern in using a certain full-body scanner? There are two types of full-body scanners: a) The Backscatter and b) The Millimeter Wave Scanner. The health concern is concentrated on the usage of the first one—Backscatter, the one that uses X-rays. Although it is true that X-rays are hazardous as they contain protons that can potentially ruin chemical bonds that would lead to cancer, Transport Security Administration (TSA) officials busted the myth--that these apparatuses are dangerous—and said that the Backscatter technology has been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and results revealed that they are deemed safe because the total dose that someone receives during the scan is tiny. Aside from health, privacy issues surfaced upon the implementation of this technology, but experts proved that the millimeter-wave scanner sends a high-speed image to the computer that's privacy-filtered. Interestingly, this technology is what inspired some photo-editing apps, a naked app scanner in particular, that simulate x-ray vision. But unlike real body scanners, these apps do not really emit x-ray energy that could penetrate one's clothing. They are merely used for fulfilling's someone's guilty fantasy of having a real body scanner app!
