WHAT’S THE MEANING

Filler episodes, more commonly known as fillers, are entries within a season that are unrelated to the show's main story. These episodes contribute little to nothing to the characters' relationships with each other nor to their development. In essence, filler episodes can basically be seen as tools to take up space and give its manga sources more time to progress since Japanese networks don't do season breaks or reruns.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the Naruto anime is filled with lots and lots of filler episodes? When a manga series grows in popularity, an anime adaptation is sure to follow suit. In order to appease both manga and television fans, adaptations will oftentimes stay true to its original source material. An anime series' positive reception will usually be considered a success, since it will result in more manga readers, all the while further boosting the anime's fame.

Naruto, considering that it is one of the biggest-selling manga titles in the entire world, has a very huge fan base, all dedicated to tuning in to its lore, characters, and everything in between. Due to this, its anime adaptation eventually caught up to its source, so the staff had to create their own stories in order to buy some time for the manga to move forward. The Naruto Shippuden anime had 210 filler episodes out of its total 500. That's roughly 42%! Dedicated fans have even made a Naruto and Naruto Shippuden filler list to help out in identifying them all.
