"1984 is an excellent dystopian novel, likely the one credited with either starting or expanding the genre, but it is not set in the Spanish Civil War. On that alone, this is a terrible inclusion in a best of list."

"What I love about this book, is the authors put real time into making sure it was historically accurate. That is something not seen in most history set books. Set in the time of the Spanish civil war, the main character starts off wealthy, ends up penniless, and shows the life she lives trying to get back on her feet. A very good read for anybody really!"

"I've been doing a school project on the Spanish Civil War and because of that I've been reading a lot of books about the subject. This is probably my favorite of the lot. It does a great job at putting you in the shoes of somebody that could have experienced it first hand. I found this book to be great for getting into the mood of the situation."

"This is a gorgeous story set against a war-torn and gruesome background. I've never read anything from this time period and I've never known characters with such diverse and troubled backgrounds. Not only characters, but families of characters. The parental relationship is the keystone here, and as an adoptee myself, it rang true for me. I would absolutely read more by this author."

"Hemingway is pure genius and he doesn't disappoint in this entertaining set of works. The stories are an important setup for the play and the play reads more like a movie which makes it incredibly interesting. His writing style shines through and though the setting of the Spanish Civil War isn't a popular or well known one, his characters and personality shine through and make it wonderful."

"This is a really good book for people wanting to know more about the Spanish Civil War. I went into it with little, to no, understanding of the Spanish Civil War and I now feel I know a lot. The author does a really great job with the storytelling. You feel like you are in the story and experiencing all the things that the characters are experiencing. I enjoyed this book a lot more than I initially thought I would."

"Very well written and intelligent spy novel about Spain during the civil war and the period right after. Strong points are the high level of information about that country in that period so that the novel is virtually good history. The author is opinionated, as most commentators of the Spanish Civil War are, but he lays out his positions intelligently and with solid evidence. His characters are complex and well drawn. Lot of atmosphere, very strong feel for the milieu. Much of the plot kind of doesn't make sense if you lay it out baldly but that's probably true of most spy novels. Doesn't rise to the level of being irritating for the most part. The novel is depressing. All of the sympathetic characters come to a bad end one way or another, Even in the post script they don't live happily, even for a short while.. A very somber picture of what the war did to ordinary people, requiring a strong stomach. Plus the outcome for Spain was dismal too, at least until Franco went away. A good read mostly, though a bit of slog from time to time. "
