"Continuing on the Judy Blume theme. This is a the first adult novel I’ve read by Blume. It’s longer than her YA fare, but it still shows the same skill at painting fascinating characters. Summer Sisters is the tale of a girl, Vix, who joins her “wild friend,” Caitlen, for a whole summer on Martha’s vineyard (in 1977) and ends up with this surrogate family every year after. It follows them from 12 to about 30. The POV is present tense, but flips around between everyone in the story except for Caitlen (she’d probably be unwritable). About 2/3 the word count is from Vix’s point of view. The first half is frankly awesome. The people are so weird, yet so real. The late 70’s early 80’s Martha’s Vineyard setting is so true to life (been there). The sex is hot, and there’s plenty of it. The pre-sexual experimentation is really well told too. However, in the second half the story picks up the speed at which it moves through time and we blow past the college and post-college years. Caitlen runs off to Europe and essentially disappears from the picture, although not the mind of the protagonist. I’m not sure I loved where it all went and wrapped up. But it doesn’t really matter because the island scenes with the two girls are unforgettable and worth the price of admission. I’m still in envy of Blume’s character and dialog skills. "

"When I saw On The Island in the bookstore, I immediately thought of Cast Away and Lost, which deal with being stranded on an island. If you like that genre, you'll like this book but it's probably more Robinson Crusoe than Gilligan's Island. It also definitely has a romantic theme for those into love stories. Probably a good read to read this summer on ... the beach!"

"If you like sappy romance novels with a bit of a suspenseful twist, then this is the book for you. After reading The Notebook, I never thought I'd read another Nicholas Sparks book. While this one was slightly less predictable than the latter book, I don't know that I'd recommend it unless you're a big fan of mushy romance novels."

"Big Little Lies is a contemporary mystery novel that takes place in a suburb somewhere in Australia. The book was so well received and so highly rated that they made a TV series out of it. More of a soap opera than anything else, it's still a great read for most people."

    #5Along for the Ride

    Along for the Ride
Along for the Ride is one of Sarah Dessen's romance novels, centered on Auden and her fateful meeting with Eli, a fellow insomniac. With the two enjoying most of their time together at night, it's going to be a long ride.

"There are several layers to this story, and I appreciated the depth in Along for the Ride that we don’t get in all of Sarah’s novels. Auden doesn’t sleep – hasn’t since before her parents divorced – and when she decides to spend the summer before college with her dad, his new wife, and their new born daughter, Auden meets fellow insomniac Eli. Along for the Ride has some of my favorite Dessen themes: female friendship, great tension between the MC and love interest, and a realistic protag. I remember relating to Auden when I was younger, because I was an insomniac and did everything I could to avoid sleeping. I loved, and still do, the idea of going on a mini-adventure every night while everyone else is sleeping. Like most of Sarah’s books, the family dynamic is tense in this one, but Auden’s parents felt so…self-absorbed and pretentious, it infuriated me to read. Ultimately this was a middle of the road Dessen novel for me: not the best, not the worst, but overall somewhat forgettable when lumped in with the rest."

"I picked this up because of how much Scribbly Gum Island is based on one of our local hidden haunts. I thought it would be an endearing little novel. Instead, it was just a bit of rubbish. If you like writing that describes "beautiful young mothers" who get it on with "dreamy" strangers, maybe you'll enjoy this."

"This is a great book! The author gives very candid descriptions and paints a vivid picture of the scenery without taking away from the story line. I especially liked the continued usage of key Greek words during the story, which she does provide a dictionary for referral. Samantha Malone is no damsel in distress, but rather a strong woman going through a hard time. Just when she is ready to move on and focus solely on her career, she finds herself falling for her boss, Demosthenis Lakis."

"This is by far my favorite book by Conroy. The characters are so well developed and the plot was extremely intriguing! I personally love the beach and this book made me feel like I was sitting in front of the ocean while i read it. The length of the book was a bit long for me, but it was such an easy read that it went quick. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense thrillers!"

"My dream growing up was to own a house on the beach, sadly things didn't go in that direction. Luckily there are things I can immerse myself in like movies, games and books that have a theme like this. The Beach House carries a very simplistic but accurate name. It's not a long book and it mostly meant for children, but I still enjoy reading it from time to time. Its nice to leave reality from time to time."
