DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Greg Smith's debut for the Newcastle Knights in 1999 is considered to be the worst in rugby history? Smith, a former American athlete, only played a single game in the National Rugby League against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. His round 3 entry into the game was seen by fans as the worst 5 minutes in Rugby League history, with Smith dropping the ball several times and failures in tackling. Before this disastrous game, Smith had apparently duped Knights coach Warren Ryan and claimed that he had played in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles. Since the internet wasn't as advanced as it was today, his word was taken without any further inquiries were made.
Many have said that one of the reasons why Ryan took Smith in so quickly was because of the NRL's smaller fan base and the potential surge in hype that his presence will bring. Nowadays though, the NRL has gotten more famous, and fans can even watch NRL games on the internet, both for free and paid with subscriptions. Although not as popular as some football leagues, the NRL, and even the rugby sport itself, has brought out novels, games, apps, and even comic books!
