DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Mancala is considered the oldest and most classic strategy game in history? Long before the emergence of strategy games on PCs and smartphones, evidence of Mancala games can be traced between 500 and 700 AD in Eritrea and Ethiopia. Etymologically, the word mancala, or sometimes called “sowing” or “count-and-capture”, is derived from the Arabic word ‘naqala’, which means “to move”. A complete round of the games takes about only 15 minutes, ideal for a coffee break! Basically, this abstract board game only requires a board with a series of holes arranged in rows, seeds or stones as playing pieces, and two players who are taking turns to play.
As time passed by, several classifications of strategy games came into existence such as abstract strategy, a game that is loosely tied to a thematic concept. One classic and perfect example of this is chess. Other classifications include simulation, wargame, and of course, the modern-day turn-based and strategy video games which are very prominent and accessible through video game consoles, smartphones, laptops, and computers that are specifically designed for gaming. Players can play on single-player strategy games while multiplayer game mode is also available for those who want to compete with other players. Consequently, the video game industry in the U.S. was estimated to have hit 17.69 billion U.S. dollars in 2016 and the video game players are mainly comprised of ages 18 to 35 years old, garnering 29% of the total population of the players. Some of the most popular strategy games on smartphones today include Battle Fleet 2, Hearthstone, First Strike, and Breach & Clear just to name a few.
