DID YOU KNOW?

The Pokemon game franchise is one of the best-selling RPGs ever? The entire franchise has pulled around 305 million in sales worldwide. It's no secret that RPGs have had a lasting appeal with gamers. The question is, why is that? What makes this game genre so popular? To get an of why that is, we'd need to delve into the psychological aspect of it all. In a word, RPGs provide us players with a sense of "escapism". These games provide an opportunity to assume a different role and be someone else. They provide a whole new world that we can explore any way we want. This leads to another reason why RPGs are popular, they give us control. We're in the driver seat and dictate how everything will progress.

There have been plenty of games that provide great experiences throughout the years. Some popular ones are The Final Fantasy and The Elder Scrolls game franchises. From the story, the environment, the combat, and of course, the loot, they had everything. It used to be that if you wanted to have a great RPG experience, you had to play single-player ones. Nowadays, online RPG games for PCs, for example, have gotten quite good, both in story and design. It's a great time to be an RPG fan with so many great titles to choose from.

"I remembered Dungeon Fighter Online in 2012 when it was handled by Nexon America. The game was fun but it was ruined by Nexon America's negligence: bad economy and bots. I was brokenhearted when it was closed. When its developer Neople announced that they'll handle the game in 2015, it was like a Christmas miracle! Now I'm back in the game but I have to start back from scratch. Fortunately, my guildmates from the Nexon era are back and we breezed the game, ready for the new contents and raids!"

"Relax, I'm also a gamer and Star Wars is my core fandom. My first Star Wars game experience was a Dungeons and Dragons version and it was a blast. When my friends at middle school and I went in separate ways, it was very lonely 'coz I dunno how to share my love for Star Wars at high school. During my senior years, that's when I discovered Star Wars: The Old Republic. I'm lucky and my friends also played it."

"I haven't played the first Final Fantasy games but I know VII to X. It was my childhood games and fell in love with the franchise. When I heard that Square Enix will launch FF IV, I immediately pre-ordered it. My expectations were crushed when it was first released but eventually, they remade the game into a better one with the "A Realm Reborn" update. A fantastic game indeed."

"It's more RPG than MMO and that's not exactly a bad thing. The graphics are nice, the combat is satisfying, and the controls are tight, just don't expect too much depth from the main story. This is a game where you will have to decide for yourself how you want to play it."

"The simplest way to describe this game is it's Monster Hunter with more western and sci-fi elements. It has its moments but for now, it doesn't do much to differentiate itself from the game that it clearly bases itself on. Hopefully, future updates will address this."
