WHAT'S THE MEANING?
An otome game, which literally means maiden game, is a story-based video game made for females. Sometimes this game is called "otoge" for short. Generally, the goal of this game is to develop a romantic relationship between a female and male. In other words, it is a female-oriented game wherein players control the main character's choices of men to pursue.
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know the first otome game is Angelique? An all-female team created the game which was released in 1994 by Koei for the Super Famicom. Originally, the game was for pre-teen and younger teenage girls. But surprisingly it became popular with older teenagers and women in their 20s. Yes, it became a smash hit among female gamers in Japan although it wasn't popular abroad. In fact, Angelique was credited for setting up the specifics and conventions of women's games. Interestingly, this genre is mostly made up of visual novels and simulation games specifically anime dating sims and life simulation games. Moreover, it has the same style elements with shojo and josei manga. But plotwise it is often similar to harem manga. Additionally, otome games released on console and handheld platforms do not contain pornographic content. Why? Because companies such as Sony and Nintendo do not allow it. Yet, there are games released on PC platforms that are rated 18+ for their sexual content. This trend has also made its way to the mobile space with mobile otome games being released for smartphones like Android.
