The Seven Deadly Sins is an anime TV series based on the manga of the same name that was written and illustrated by Nakaba Suzuki. The manga started its life as a one-shot pilot chapter before it started serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine. The series ran for 24 episodes and debuted on MBS and other Japan News Network stations on October 5, 2014. It wasn't long before the series was picked up for an English release by Netflix just the following year. All 24 episodes of the show were released on November 1, 2015, and was available in both subbed and English dubbed format. A couple of years later, Funimation acquired distribution rights to the show's Blu-ray and DVD releases in Canada and the US.
The setting of the series is set in a time akin to the European Middle Ages, think medieval times and knights. The lead group of knights is named after the seven deadly sins, hence the name of the show. This group of knights resides in the land of Britannia. They were disbanded for apparently staging a coup against the Liones kingdom. The knights are on a path to clear their name and to stop the Holy Knights. The Holy Knights have been manipulated by the demon Fraudrin to release the Demon Race from their prison. Ready to watch the show now? Did you know that the main characters of Seven Deadly Sins are all named after Arthurian legends? This comes to no surprise since the fantasy anime is set during the medieval period. Meliodas was named after the father of Tristan and one of the Knights of the Round Table. Ban got his name from Sir Lancelot and Sir Hector de Maris' father, King Ban. He is one of the characters in the adventure anime who doesn't have any scared weapon. Ban's exceptional fighting skills and his immortality may be the reasons why he doesn't need one. The adorable giant, Diane, got her name from Diana of the Wood which explains her closeness to nature.
Merlin, of course, was named after the legendary wizard. Much like King Arthur's adviser, Merlin serves as Meliodas' also helped Arthur Pendragon in saving Camelot. Escanor is named after "Escanor le Grand." The Arthurian legend was said to be a very large man raised by a giant and witch. Like Escanor from the anime, he can only hold is immense strength during specific times of the day. Gowther's name comes from a character in a short Middle English tail-rhyme. Sir Gowther is said to be Merlin's half-brother. King is the only main character in the anime series who doesn't have any specific reference to Arthurian legends. Even the love interests of the other characters were referenced from the old English myth. Elizabeth and Elaine were also related romantically to Meliodas and Ban in their Arthurian counterpart.
