Podcasts are a series of digital audio and/or video files distributed into different episodes, also downloadable by users for future listening. Oftentimes, podcasts are available for subscription and are automatically downloaded onto a user's devices as soon as a new episode is released.
Did you know that the total subscriptions for podcasts reached more than 1 billion back in 2013? Before the term was coined in 2004 by The Guardian journalist Ben Hammersley, "podcasting" was referred to as "audioblogging". Hammersley initially suggested the word as a linguistic blend of "iPod" and "broadcast".
Similar to radio programs but downloaded as files that are playable at a user's convenience, podcasting used to be an obscure method of spreading information. Although not a popular method of gaining information back in the day, present-day podcasts have grown in popularity. One of the medium's most popular milestones was reached back in 2013, with total podcast subscriptions for iTunes reaching up to 1 billion. The rise in popularity gave birth to plenty of the best podcast apps for iOS devices, Windows, Android phones, and many more. With podcasts for almost every topic under the sun and loads of resources for podcast lovers, it's safe to assume that this medium, despite seeming uncertain, is here to stay.
