DID YOU KNOW?
The RTS subgenre of strategy games were the pioneers for modern esports, laying the groundwork for competitive strategy games like the ones stated above and overall popularizing esports. It is also the subgenre with one of the most influential moments in esports history: the Bisu vs Savior matchup. From the release of Starcraft: Brood War (the 3rd and final official expansion of Starcraft I) up until the 2007 MSL final, the matchup between the technologically adept Protoss and the insectoid Zerg was heavily sided towards the latter. Bisu, a Protoss player, faced off against Savior, a Zerg player, with the latter even being considered the best Starcraft player at the time (“bonjwa” in Korean). With odds stacked against him, Bisu surprised the crowd when he brought in a new Protoss build (subsequently referred to as the “Bisu Build”), resulting in an upsetting 3-0 win against Savior. While the Bisu Build is now easily countered by other strategies, it was an influential match at the time as it flipped the meta on its head, and the phenomenon earned Bisu the nickname, “the Revolutionist”.
Starcraft has had a heavy influence on the strategy genre, and it shares the same subgenre as Shadow Tactics, one of the entries on this list! Not an RTS fan? The other entries on this list may entice you as they are from the other different subgenres of strategy. Want to have a bit more thinking time? Try out turn-based tactical games like Valkyria Chronicles or XCOM 2. More into building civilizations? Tropico 5 and Cities: Skylines might be to your liking. This list is sure to have something that would be your cup of stra-TEA-gy.
