DID YOU KNOW?

The PlayStation Portable (PSP for short) may have failed to beat out its competitor, the Nintendo DS, but it still managed to leave a mark as an innovator of the portable gaming industry. Starting with the difference it made for its home company, the PSP was the first Sony console to not have region locking when it came to games. People who owned an Asian region PSP could enjoy UMDs bought in U.S., which was a great feature even if it did not apply to UMD movies. Another appreciated feature was the custom firmware, which allowed people to download soft copies of games from the internet in order to play them instead of having to buy UMDs of games that might not be available in their region. PSP’s custom firmware also allowed it to be used as an emulator, meaning it could play games from other often older consoles, even those of Nintendo! Speaking of Nintendo, nearby PSP owners could connect to one another in order to enjoy multiplayer using an ad hoc network, something the DS was unable to do without using a Wi-Fi adapter. Lastly, the PSP was home to some of the best spin-off titles that helped expand a franchise’s lore with otherwise unrevealed chapters. One such example was God of War: Chains of Olympus, one of the entries on this list!

The PSP had a lot going for it in its time and is still considered by many as an innovator of the portable gaming department. Want to experience the portable goodness? Check out this list of best PSP games for titles you don’t want to miss out on. It’s never too late to START!
