Databases can be used usually both standalone or along with programming languages (code). When using standalone you usually need to use a common database language (known as SQL) to query data stored in the database. When using a programming language you can query data using the same SQL or use another API. This is an example.

"From my experience in systems management you can either pay for things or do them the expensive way. So PostgreSQL surprises me as it is both open source and does not waste my time, have missing features, or require endless retraining to accommodate its slapped together workflow. It all works, feels logical, and works on pretty much any OS out there. Honestly, I cannot find fault here which is something I normally cannot say about open source software."

"I found that MySQL is a good database and even better it is open source so you don't have to pay for one. It loads fairly quickly and is easy to use. I have input all my information with no issues and I found it to be intuitive and easy to use."
