DID YOU KNOW
Did you know that the tablet device that is recognized as the first of its kind is Hindsight's educational tablet, the Letterbug? Hindsight, a startup created in Enfield, conceived and created the Letterbug, a small rectangular device with a digital touchscreen that displays letters. According to its main creator, Wil Jones, it was created to help his kids learn and practice handwriting. It was a groundbreaking invention in 1986, with its high-res plasma display touch screen, 8086 processor, 512K RAM, 256K ROM, and it had a built-in speaker with a Votrax SC-01. The earliest prototypes were thicker than one inch and were too heavy for kids, but the one designed for presentations looked really similar to modern tablets but is an inch thick. When the hardware was ready, Jones and his team sought the help of Special Education experts and handwriting teachers to create the application, which eventually included educational games like connect-the-dots. It was presented to the MIT Enterprise forum, but it did not enter the market because it did not have enough software and was too expensive for schools. Nowadays, tablet computers are sold by the millions, and it is not only for educational purposes, but can be used to play games like Angry Birds, Temple Run 2, and Plants vs. Zombies.
