Did you know that in Japanese mythology, the cause of earthquakes is the giant catfish called Namazu? According to them, Namazu loves causing trouble and mayhem and so from time to time, he waggles his tail and once he does it, the entire earth shakes! He is believed to be one of the yo-kai—these are folklore creatures that are believed to be the causes of disasters and misfortunes interestingly, Kashima, a god, is the only one who guards and controls him with the help of a powerful capstone that pushes the fish down to the underground and immobilizes him. On a serious note, the highest tsunami ever recorded in the history hit the Ishigaki Island in Japan in 1771—a 278-feet tsunami. It is no surprise that Japan is prone to natural disasters, for the country’s islands are in the line of the Pacific Ring of Fire. The Pacific Ring of Fire is a region of the Pacific Area where most of tectonic activities occur such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Moreover, 75% of the world’s most active volcanoes can be found in the region and the movements of the plates do not only result to earthquakes but an overall movement in the location of the countries. As a matter of fact, a massive earthquake in Chile moved a city to the west in 2010 and what’s more interesting is that Los Angeles is moving towards San Francisco 2-inches per year. If you are not sure about the measure, think of the growth of your fingernails, they are of the same rate.
