Meetup offers ways for people to find a specific kind of group in their area or allows people to start their own group. The site says that over 2,000 meetup groups get together in local communities each day.

"I have moved abroad a few times in the past, once for school and once for work, and I always wished that I had a way to connect to people who share similar interests to me. For example, I am really Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and enjoy training, but I also like watching events and attending live competitions. Both times I lived abroad, I struggled to connect with others who enjoyed the martial art, besides those I encountered at local schools. However, both times I was living abroad, I happened to connect with several like-minded folks, but literally not until the final weeks before I had to move back home. I wish there was a way to network with others more effectively and Meetup allows just that. Whenever I am visiting a new city, I have gotten in the habit of starting a meetup as a way to instantly assess whether or not I'll be able to connect with others who I share interests with. Also, when I travel, or if I move abroad again, I would use Meetup to find unique and unexpected activities in the area, which I would use as a means for connecting with new friends and acquaintances."

"Having moved abroad several times I have experienced the stress and panic of trying to get everything situated without really having an appreciation for how much work it actually was. However, a lot of my struggles stemmed from the fact that most resources for moving abroad are either overly vague or oddly specific, both of which are not particularly helpful. Fortunately, I found The Essential Guide To Planning Your Dream Move Abroad by Al Bryant on Amazon and it is amazingly helpful. There are handy checklists that I used for this particular move abroad and it made life so much easier, and I did not encounter any last minute panic. What a life saver!"

"I read this thinking it might give me some pointers i couldn't get from a plain old search engine. I was wrong. Other than the typical warnings and considerations mentioned in every anecdote on the internet there was very little unique content here. It was also pretty poorly written."
