The National Basketball Association (NBA) is more than just a basketball league. Did you know that the 2017 NBA All-Star Game was supposed to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina? But instead, it was held in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Smoothie King Center. You wanna know the reason? It was because of a controversial law from North Carolina. The law bans transgenders from using bathrooms in accordance with their gender preference. Moreover, the bathroom bill says transgenders must use public restrooms corresponding with their biological sex. According to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA has always taken pride in upholding their fundamental belief of equality and inclusion for all individuals. Unfortunately, for the league, the bill opposes diversity. And most especially, it outraged LGBT rights advocates. No wonder an article on CNN says the NBA players are not afraid to lead on social justice.
Despite the changes, the 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend game successfully pushed through with the festivities. It included a celebrity game, a rising stars game, slam dunk contest, a 3-point shooting, contest and many more. Yet, it is worthy to recognize the fact that the relations between the government of North Carolina and the NBA league are still intact. In fact, after the mid-season break in 2017, the NBA announced that they are awarding Charlotte the chance to hold the 2019 NBA All-Star Game--and it really happened there! By the way, you catch up on the recent NBA playoffs on some websites online. The ratification of the bill paved the way for the NBA league to happen once again in its home city for three decades.
