True Detective’s third season was first written with a white lead character in mind. This changed when Award-winning actor Mahershala Ali pitched himself for the lead role. A supporting role was offered to Ali but he did not want to settle for an offer he has been given throughout his career. To take on the lead role, Mahershala Ali had to convince the creator of True Detective, Nic Pizzolatto. Being an Academy Award winner was already a strong suit but the actor took his point further. Ali showed Pizzolatto photos of his grandfather as a state police officer. The actor stressed that they "existed in this space". Ali told the creator, "I think your story would be served, I think the story would be improved in this case, if this lead character was black."
