Roguelike is a subgenre of role-playing games. The term comes from the 1980 game Rogue, which is said to be the first game to define the genre. “Roguelikes” are therefore games like the game Rogue. Among other things, the subgenre is characterized by the permanent death of a character, procedurally generated levels, grid-based graphics, and a dungeon setting. The Berlin Interpretation divides these characteristics into “high-value factors” and “low-value factors,” with the former being characteristics that a game must have to be called a roguelike, while the latter are often, but not always, characteristics of a roguelike.

As a genre, roguelike has influenced other genres to adapt some of its defining characteristics. The term “roguelite,” or “roguelike-like” is sometimes used to refer to games that are roguelike-inspired, in that they have some of the characteristics of a rougelike. Some examples of roguelites include Sunless Sea, Out There, and Diablo. Meanwhile, canonical examples of roguelikes include Nethack, Angband, Crawl, and Ancient Domains of Mystery. While the game Rogue is credited with being the pioneer game, it was preceded by Beneath Apple Manor which was released in 1978. These classic roguelike games are, by essence, shaped by the limitations of technology at the time, like how the levels are procedurally generated because the capacities for memory was enough to save only a few levels.
