"This book is okay. It’s just okay. It is a fantasy vampire romance novel. However, it is less romance and more full-blown erotica. Some of the sex scenes are incredibly detailed to the point where they come off as course. This book is essentially pornography. Not really as much pure-hearted romance as I would have desired. Keep your kids far, far away from this book. It would be very disturbing for young readers. You will enjoy this book if you read Twilight and wondered to yourself, “where is the deranged pornography?”"

"Simply Shameless is set in a very interesting point in history. I didn't much enjoy the writing or the story. Not to say it was bad, just a little generic and not my cup of tea. The setting helped overcome that and the end result was a fairly interesting story."

"The Regency period is a time where women were often sold for sex and were treated as vastly inferior to men. This period is not a time I enjoy reading about and the novel "The Secret Pearl" did not change my mind. The romance novel tried to captivate my attention by setting a somewhat different scene but the writing was dull and the plot was uninteresting. "

"Fool for Love is a Regency historical romance series by Eloisa James. This is one of my favorite genres and I was not disappointed in this book. I loved the feisty heroine, the debonair hero, the intrigue, surprises, betrayals, romance, and happy ever after ending. The only thing I would improve is the historical setting which I felt needed more details to make it come alive in my imagination."

"I'm too much of a purist-- let me be forthright about that before I begin. If I want to read epic poetry I will comb through Homer and Dante and if I am in the mood for Victorian era storytelling I will thumb through the thirty copies of "Vanity Fair" occupying their own dusty shelf section at my public library. In other words, there is nothing quite like the original! So, I am going to tone down my criticism(s) of "Shades of Milk and Honey" because I acknowledge in advance my bias in the case. Still, I can't quite recuse myself: I know what I know and it must be said. Kowal writes reasonably well, but she is no Jane Austen. The base story of "Shades of Milk and Honey" revolves around the difficult path and choices negotiated by a lady named Jane in attempting to negotiate the byzantine world of reserve and social decorum in her efforts to achieve a good outcome for both her sister Melody and herself. Melody, of course, is stunningly beautiful while Jane, on the other hand, is socially skilled but a good bit more, well, plain. My core criticism could be summarized by the old writer's adage: Write what you know. Unfortunately, neo-historical romance is always written in the same manner as a painter painting an object viewed through a mirror: There is a little blurriness, a great need to just fill things in. My advice: Just reread "Pride and Prejudice," or, if that doesn't cut it, learn a new language and read that novel in translation."
