"I really enjoyed the world building that's going on in this book. Unfortunately, the quality of writing behind it is subpar at best. It's a shame to have a nice, rich world to play with and it's stunted by slightly worse than average writing."

"This is the first book in the series, and is a slow-burning forbidden romance. It is better than most supernatural YA romances, especially those with vampires. The story is unique - you will not find another like it."

"While the movie did a good job giving us visuals of what some of these creatures look like - if you are looking at this book because of the movie - DO NOT BUY IT. This book is literally just a collection and directory of magical creatures in Rowling's Harry Potter world. The story of the movie is not in the book. If you're looking for a magical adventure, you'll have to imagine yourself, or Newt, going in search of these beasts and seeing how he came to witness their talents. If you're looking for romance, well, I'm sure there may be a novelization of the movie somewhere at this point, though I haven't seen it. This book is for the Potter fans who want a piece of the world of Harry Potter in their homes, for the people who want to open a book and not read about the world of Harry Potter, but rather feel like they're one of the students of Hogwart's. For me, I like opening the book myself to a random creature and asking my children what they would do to if they came across one of the creatures, and if we wanted to invite him home for tea, how would we go about doing it? It's a book that gives more to the imagination, and I love it."

"If your a fan of romance novels, this may be a bit of a disappointment. The book moves way to fast, I like the characters to develop as I read. Here while the story is well written, I would like to be able to get to know the characters a bit. The story moves a bit too fast for me to connect with them.."

It was an instant favorite and it has stuck with me enough to purposely seek it out 15 years later. It is a great story about perseverance, courage, heart and it really helped shape me as a woman. I highly recommend it to anyone. "

"Graceling takes place in a medieval time period where seven kingdoms rule the land. Among the people there are those who are ‘graced’; those bearing two different colored eyes and a superhuman expertise in a particular skill (Ex. fighting, swimming, climbing, archery, mind reading, etc). Katsa, the protagonist, has the grace of killing. She lives in the Middluns kingdom where those that are graced belong to King Randa and have little freedom. The king uses her as a weapon, sending her out on missions to threaten, torture, and kill against her will. It is only when Prince Tealiff of the Lienid kingdom is kidnapped that Katsa embarks on her own mission of saving him and learning the reason for his capture. She is accompanied by some friends and allies along the way, including the charming Prince Po of Lienid. When I first picked this book up I initially that there was a greater emphasis on the magic aspect of the story. But in actuality, it is a pretty normal setting except for the graced people. And even the skills of the graced are pretty normal: swimming, running, fighting. The only grace that we see that is particularly supernatural is mind reading."
